Conductor - Kathleen Hovey
Kathleen was born and educated in Winnipeg, receiving her musical training under Anne Pomer James and John Waterhouse.  She continued violin and orchestral studies at the University of Ottawa and was a professional violinist with the Ottawa, Nepean and Kingston Symphony Orchestras and l'Orchestre de chambre de Hull. Kathleen pursued violin pedagogy studies in Suzuki, Paul Rolland methods and the University of Indiana summer program, and has been very active in music education for youth in Ottawa, Kingston and the Sunshine Coast for over 20 years. 
While in Ontario Kathleen conducted at the Ottawa Youth Orchestra Academy and the for the Kingston Junior Strings.  She taught string programs for the Ottawa, Carleton and Frontenac Boards of Education as well as privately.
After moving to the Coast in 1994 she became Conductor Sunshine Coast Intermediate and Youth Orchestras from 1995-2002. The youth orchestra went on tour to Kamloops and Squamish, played school concerts on the Sunshine Coast, and even played for the Governor General of Canada. Kathleen has also conducted the Sunshine Coast Music Society's Soundwaves Orchestra.  She worked with elementary schools in several performances of Peter and the Wolf and Carnival of the Animals, with participating schools acting out the stories.  She was also Director of the Seacoast Chamber Players, Coast Music Camp and Chamber Music Camp during this time.
Kathleen has served on the Boards of the Sunshine Coast Festival of the Performing Arts, Sunshine Coast Music Society and Pender Harbour Music Society.  She is a recipient of Gillian Lowndes Award from the Sunshine Coast Arts Council. 
Kathleen is a member of the American Federation of Musicians, American Suzuki Association, American String Teachers Association and the BC Registered Teachers Association.  She is a presently a violinist with Vancouver Island and Kamloops Symphony Orchestras, is Strings Chairperson with the SC Festival of the Performing Arts, teaches violin, viola and coaches chamber ensembles.
